This book is a good read. It’s a graphic description of a young man’s struggle to survive the inner city community he was born into. His parents Levi and Kay were young and caught up into the drug and alcohol fueled environment of those times and that place as his three younger brothers were born. There are aunts and uncles and many cousins that form an extended family around them. It is as if that is a strength, with good relatives and bad, coming together at times of crisis, enduring violence and drugs and guns amid them and around them. By the 1980s Baltimore was a horror of dope and crack and gangs while partying with liquor and beer and reefer and loud music was an antidote to despair for most of the young adult population. This was the world young Will and his cousins knew, a world of making do with what was around, playing and not even aware that their world was making them grow up too fast, exposing them to the blight that surrounded them too soon. Being beaten seemed normal., mischief and lying to get out of trouble just a way of life. Grandmother Laura brought Kay into the light of her church and Kay from then on became free from drugs and brought her family into faith though Levi continued dugs.Sex is omnipresent and promiscuous, the young taking their examples from the society around them.
What comes up throughout the book is that their environment is a world they stay in, not venturing outside, and when Levi goes on a disastrous drug run to New Jersey it’s as if he has gone to another country. As they move into a dead end street they named The Hole they have just moved from one part of the slum to another. Levi after rehabilitation gave up his drugs and alcohol and joined them in church, Life starts to become better for them.
By 1990 guns became wanted by young men, excitement at the thought of them. Theft, sex and wild times became a way of life. The day before Will’s sixteenth birthday he is accidentally shot through the back and the description of that event and his thoughts and feelings on that day and the days following is about the best I have ever read of someone who has been shot. His journey from that moment on, years before he can stand, helpless, filled with thoughts and vengeance, coming to recovery with a pact with God, are enthralling.
His subsequent life, falling back into old ways, renewing himself with determination, are woven into the solid fabric of a large extended family, taking care of each other, giving protection against the world around them, makes this a must read book.
We should all know that young people are resilient, no matter how bad the environment, and the only way forward for them is faith and education. The world is getting better for such young people, but sadly not enough and not soon enough. I congratulate the authors for producing such a searing gritty story.

When I first started reading this book, I didn't like it. It was set in Baltimore and it talked about life in the streets. About having sex and getting into gang fights. Something that I, as a Singaporean was not used to. I couldn't level with the author because I didn't understand his lifestyle. That said, I kept reading because there was just something about it that kept me interested.
So the story follows Will as he lives his life, gets into trouble with his brothers and chases girls. Around the middle of the book, something incredible happens. The author's older brother Will gets shot and he goes into a coma for 7 months.
Following that, he becomes paralysed from the waist down and he doesn't walk for 2 years. Then one night, after praying passionately, The Lord gave him the ability to walk again. After parading his new ability around to his family, he broke the very promise that he made to get God to give him back the ability to walk. So, God took the ability away again. The author quoted the bible here saying, 'The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.'. I have always read stories about the Lord giving. In majority of the things I've heard, The Lord is always giving. Very rarely do you come across a story that shows you that the Lord also takes away. Eventually the Lord granted him the ability to walk again though and that experience changed Will's life drastically.
I have never read a book that was so raw and honest as this one was. I could feel that the author was stripping bare in this book and just letting his memories consume him which is something you rarely find in novels and autobiographies nowadays.
This is certainly a must-read because of it's honesty. What I liked about the book was that the author wasn't trying to cover anything up. He portrayed Baltimore and life there the way it was. There want stereotypes that you find in the movies. There was just him and his life.

This book was merely okay. Although it is very detailed, the majority of the book deals with his father's abusive nature when he was a child, and his sexual exploits as a teen. Although I remained engrossed, I believe some of the stories are fabricated, or at least embellished.
I really enjoyed living through the eyes of the authors in this book. I use to teach in the Baltimore city public school system and lived in Baltimore for an extended period of time. I have interacted with parents, teachers, students, and members of the community on all levels. The story collaborates with my experiences and provides a more in depth perception of life in the city for the youth. There were a few grammatical errors in the book, but it did not mess with the flow of the book. The urban reader wants to relate with an urban author whose style is authentic and genuine. If you have ever watched "The Wire" which is a television series based off of true life stories and interactions from a former Baltimore city police officer much of what is told in this book is similar to some of the depictions displayed on the t.v. show. I am really excited to read the upcoming books from these authors. With more urban cultures exposing the grassroots issues and expressing them through art and literature we can try to solve the problem of a flawed system. A system that is set up to fail those going through it. You have to be lucky or extremely motivated to make it out of the places like "The Hole".
When I started to read this book I couldn't put it down. I thought it was a biography, especially with all the chapter notes. As I read further, I got more and more confused. Was the lead character Christian, confused, suffering brain damage from the constant fighting and beatings he received? Why does he revert to guns after promising so often to mend his ways? I simply could not tell.
